CSKA was formed in 1948 under the auspices of the Bulgarian army’s sports association. The team boasts an impressive collection of trophies: it has won the Bulgarian championship 31 times, the Bulgarian Cup 21 times and the Bulgarian Super Cup 4 times.

CSKA Sofia is a frequent participant in the European competitions and has reached the semi-finals of the European Cup twice and the UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup on one occasion.

Many great players have worn the jersey of the ‘Chervenite’ or ‘Reds’.

Two of the club’s most famous players are certainly Hristo Stoichkov (171 games, 114 goals), winner of the Ballon d’Or in 1994 when he led the Bulgarian national team to fourth place in the World Cup in the United States, and Dimitar Berbatov who wore the CSKA jersey while still very young and racked up 65 games and 38 goals.
